Roger Federer beat Juan Martin del Potro 6–7, 6–4, 6–3 at his home ATP tournament in Basel. Federer thereby avenged his two previous final defeats in Basel by the Argentine. In a high-class and at times dramatic match, Federer overturned the set deficit and celebrated his eighth overall success at the Swiss Indoors.
After the match, Federer announced that he would skip the Masters 1000 tournament in Paris starting this week. Rafael Nadal therefore needs only one win in the French capital to remain world number one at the end of the year.
