Kohlschreiber bezwang den French-Open-Sieger Rafael Nadal völlig überraschend mit 6:3, 6:4.
In the semi-final, the Augsburg native faces either the Czech player Tomas Berdych oder seinen Landsmann Tommy Haas.
Mit einer vorzeitigen Niederlage von Nadal, the eleven-time Grand Slam champion, was something nobody had expected. Not tournament director Ralf Weber, not the spectators at the Gerry Weber Open, and probably not the 28-year-old Kohlschreiber selbst.
Kohlschreiber erwischte den besseren Start, während Nadal was still looking for his rhythm. So took Kohlschreiber the early break and took a 3:0 lead. He was particularly impressive on serve in the first set. Thus Kohlschreiber, ranked number 34 in the world, won 15 of 16 points when his first serve went in. Nadal did not have a single break point in the first set. At 5:3, Kohlschreiber then composure and took the service game to love.
After 1:24 hours another return from Nadal in the net and Kohlschreiber had won the match 6:3, 6:4.
"I did nothing wrong from start to finish. That was definitely world class", said Kohlschreiber after the match: "Rafa certainly did not play his best grass-court tennis today, but I do not want to downplay my performance. I am absolutely delighted."
We would have liked to see victories like that more often.
The second semifinal will be played by Michail Juschny against Federer or Milos Raonic.
