With Windows Vista, Microsoft is bringing a new operating system for PCs to market for the first time in five years. Vista was a difficult birth. Microsoft wanted to correct conceptual mistakes from earlier versions, which, in the opinion of experts, has also been done quite well. Quite rightly, the company came under repeated criticism in recent years because of various security vulnerabilities in Windows. The Internet Explorer browser in particular proved such a major security risk that experts recommended switching to alternatives such as Mozilla Firefox or Opera.
Business customers can buy Windows Vista licences from today; private users will have the new system from 30 January 2007. Microsoft promises that Vista will change everything. The new Explorer 7, part of Vista, has already been available for several weeks but can only be installed on Windows XP. Only Vista users benefit from all the new Explorer security features, because only the new Windows runs the browser isolated from the operating system. Malicious code should therefore be unable to cause damage.
