At the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris he won the gold medal in doubles, together with his brother Hugh and in mixed doubles with Charlotte Cooper
He also reached the semi-finals (singles) at the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris, but would have faced his brother there Hugh Doherty would have had to play; Reginald withdrew from the semi-final and Hugh advanced to the final without playing, going on to win it.
